New Single: "Desensitized" by The Ones You Forgot
Motivational Muses Review | by: Matthew Pineda
Released on: February 5, 2021
The Ones You Forgot, a pop-rock band from Brick, New Jersey, released their latest single “Desensitized” on February 5, 2021. Their sonic and alternative sound sets the band off with a refreshing take for their new track that explores an emotional state of acceptance.
“Scrape my knees on the concrete / I don’t feel anything, I think I like it that way.” Lead vocalist Jenna Bruno sets up the beginning of the track by addressing a toxic state of mind that contrasts with Bruno acknowledging their ‘desensitized’ state. “Someday it’s gonna catch up to me / Do you know what it's like to pretend that you’re fine? / Come to realize I don’t think I’m alive.” This raw, emotional delivery Bruno delivers on the hook expresses a form of acceptance for their mental health—a universal feeling of detachment that I feel all listeners could relate to given what has happened in the world throughout 2020.
Guitarists Ferdinand Benauro and Matt Thompson, bassist Lance Nelson as well as drummer Justin Rodman, create an atmosphere of suspending dark, negative thoughts that contrast with recuperation from a desensitized state. The light and heavy strings combat with the aggressive drumming, which differentiates the state and mood of the track with Jenna Bruno’s vocal progression.
I truly enjoyed Jenna Bruno’s delivery on the entire track, especially on the mesmerizing, memorable, and very much relatable hook of being desensitized. There've been moments where I felt I experienced these moments with being desensitized to media or moments in my life that I don’t know how to deal with, and hearing The Ones You Forget in full formation on this track was a great experience.
